Development
The project started at Hessentag 2007 in Butzbach: five musicians from our partner regions gave an outstanding concert in front of 5000 visitors ahead of the performance of Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, who performed there with orchestra. The project began developing further into a jazz school for young musicians in 2008, with three days of instrumental lessons and a final concert at the Hessentag in Homberg. In 2009, five students from each partner region were invited to play music together in Hesse for the first time, and a CD with a bilingual booklet was produced from this concert. In 2010, the concept of the European Jazz School was changed. Instead of teaching groups in single instruments like drums, guitar, bass etc. they rehearsed in internationally diverse workshop bands. They met musically and humanly at eye level, which had a very positive effect on the feedback of the participants.
In addition, visits were made to all partner regions within Hesse in order to conduct direct talks about the necessary prerequisites for cooperation with the local music education institutions.
Since 2012, participants from the partner region Bursa of the Uludag University in Turkey have also joined. They often bring along other instruments like oud, baglama (saz), ney or zither. This instrumentation of the bands leads to a new musical experience for all participants, for even the musical background of the Turkish participants, who are not offered the opportunity to study jazz as an institutional subject, brings new, fertile, and creative elements into the project.

..“Most don't know each other at the beginning but after the 3 days the group is so welded together, that one feels a family flair. Friendships have developed and contacts have been made.
The contact between the teachers and students is also special because of the family flair that is created. Encounters on such a personal level are generally not possible in a university context and enable a completely different learning experience.

….When we have started to send our students to this project, what I heard from them often after their return, that it was one of the best experiences they have ever had throughout their education. I can say that the experiences they have had are not only about their musicianship skills but also about their self developments. So, I strongly believe that this is not only a workshop for us. It is a real "life school" I can say…..
Workshops
The annually recurring workshops in Hesse usually take place in Marburg. From there, the participants took the train to the final concert in the respective Hessentag city. Since 2011, ten additional workshops have taken place in the following partner regions:

This means that within the framework of this project eleven workshops have taken place in Hesse and another eleven in our partner regions. We were able to reach a total of about 550 students and performed in about 110 different band formations on international stages. Poznan Music Academy also released another CD as a live recording of a concert.
